Description

Atlir names are a blend between Northman names and names used by immigrants, mainly from the Three Isles. The longer northern variants have been shortened down and in some cases modified to enable easier pronunciation.

Even though Atalheim today consists out a mixture of cultures which is reflected in the first names, it still shares a common cultural naming system with the Northmen who founded the nation. Atlir surnames are patronymic (and sometimes matronymic) in that they reflect the immediate father (or mother) of the child and not the historic family lineage. Some family names exist, mostly inherited from parents of foreign origin.

Example, a man named Arn Gunnarson has a son named Fjalar. Fjalar's last name will not be Gunnarson like his father's; it will become Arnsson, literally indicating that Fjalar is the son of Arn (Arns + son).

The same practice is used for daughters. Arn Gunnarson's daughter KatrĂn would not have the last name Gunnarson; she would have the name Gunnarsdottir. Again, the name literally meaning "Gunnar's daughter" (Gunnars + dottir).

The vast majority of Atlir surnames carry the name of the father, but occasionally the mother's name is used: e.g., in cases where the child or mother wishes to end social ties with the biological father. Some women use it as a social statement whilst others simply choose it as a matter of style. Atlir whose father's identity is uncertain also carry a matronymic name.
